Bonnets

A bonnet does overnight what a durag does by day: it guards the hair while you sleep. For braids, long hair, locs and beards, a good bonnet is the difference between waking up to the style you went to bed with and starting over every morning.

Why a bonnet, not just a pillowcase

Cotton pillowcases pull moisture out of hair and create friction all night. A satin bonnet keeps moisture in and lets hair slide instead of snag. That is the whole job — less breakage, less frizz, longer-lasting styles.

Fit that stays on

The band should sit snug around the hairline without sliding up or digging in. If your bonnet falls off at night, the fix is usually band placement or size, not a new bonnet — try it lower on the forehead and make sure all the hair is actually inside before you tie or band it down.

Satin care

Wash satin bonnets gently and air-dry them. Heat damages the smooth surface that makes satin work, and a rough wash shortens the life of the elastic. A bonnet that is washed right lasts months longer than one thrown in with towels.

Bonnets beyond hair

Beard bonnets protect facial hair overnight the same way head bonnets protect styles, and sized-down bonnets protect little hair from day one. One principle covers all of it: protect it while you sleep, or repair it in the morning.
