How a durag should fit — the five-point check

How a Durag Should Fit: The Five-Point Fit Check

'One size fits all' has ended more wave journeys than bad brushing. A durag that does not fit your head cannot compress evenly, and uneven compression trains an uneven pattern — slowly, nightly, while you sleep. Royalty Headwear's (@royaltyheadwear318) wear tutorial below shows a durag sitting the way it should. This guide gives you the five-point check to run on any durag, new or old, in about ten seconds.

Points 1–2: Front edge and crown

Point one: the front edge sits level, just above the eyebrows or at the hairline, and stays there when you nod and shake gently. If it migrates upward, the body is too small or the tails are pulling unevenly; if it slides over your brows, it is sitting too low or the fabric has stretched out.

Point two: the crown lies smooth. Run your palm over the top — the fabric should contact the whole crown with no tenting, bridging, or loose folds. A durag that tents at the crown is not compressing your crown at all, and your crown is where patterns go to be forgotten. This is the checkpoint most people skip and the one that matters most for 360s.

Points 3–4: Cape and tails

Point three: the cape covers the back of your hair completely and hangs flat, with the bottom edge below your hairline at the neck. If the cape rides up and exposes the back hairline, the body is short for your head or your hair has outgrown it mid-wolf.

Point four: the tails, when tied, leave the knot or tuck seated at the back with the tails lying flat — not straining, not twisted into cords, and with a little length to spare. Straining tails mean every dimension upstream is too small; the tie is compensating for the cut.

Point 5: The feel test

Point five is overall feel after two minutes: firm, even pressure everywhere, no pinch points, no headache building, no spot where the fabric feels absent. Even pressure is the definition of a fitting durag — because even pressure is literally what the product is for.

Run this check when a durag is new, again after its first wash (some fabrics relax), and whenever your pattern develops a mysterious weak spot — a durag that has stretched out of fit is a common hidden cause. Fit is not a purchase-day property. It is a condition you maintain, like the pattern itself.

Re-run the check after any big change — a fresh cut, a new brand, the middle of a wolf. Fit is a moving target because your head, in wave terms, is a moving target. Ten seconds of checking protects the other twenty-three hours and fifty minutes of the day.
